University Of Ilorin

University Of Ilorin

Located on a very large expanse of land in Ilorin, the capital city of Kwara state, this institution is among the second generation universities in Nigeria. It opened for academic activities in 1975 as an affiliate University College of the University of Ibadan, and attained full autonomy in October, 1977 with Professor O.O. Akinkugbe as the pioneer Vice Chancellor.

Optometry training was established to help produce practitioners that can help meet the eye care needs of the local populace. The programme admitted its first set of students and took off in August 2013 and by April 2014, the Senate of the University of Ilorin had approved the training curriculum as “Optometry and Vision Science” in order to accommodate post-graduate training in Vision Science. The programme is housed in a uniquely-designed, purpose-built building of its own and its resources have been verified by the NUC.
