NOA Expresses Gratitude to Abia State University Vice Chancellor for Upholding Promise

The President and National Executive Council (NEC) of the Nigerian Optometric Association (NOA) extends their heartfelt appreciation to the Vice Chancellor of Abia State University (ABSU), Professor Onyemachi Maxwell Ogbulu and the Senate of the University, for fulfilling their promise to upgrade the Optometry department to a full-fledged Faculty.

The National Executive Council of the Nigerian Optometric Association (NOA), led by Dr. Anderson Chimeziri, has been working tirelessly advocating for this feat alongside other strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing the profession and elevating the prestige and value of Optometry in Nigeria.

This milestone achievement was made possible through the collective efforts of various stakeholders, the ODORBN, the Principal officers and Staff of Optometry, especially, the substantive head of the Department of Optometry, Assoc. Prof. Ubani (FNCO), who communicated the official approval by the ABSU Senate on April 24, 2024. This also comes as a mark of honour to our late Optometry Icon and former Vice Chancellor of Abia State University, Prof.E.U. Ikonne.

The newly established Faculty of Optometry will comprise six departments:

  1. Ocular Health
  2. Low Vision and Rehabilitation
  3. Primary Care Optometry
  4. Cornea and Contact Lens Practice
  5. Pediatric Optometry
  6. Orthoptics and Vision Therapy

The NOA is particularly thrilled that this development aligns with the Nigeria Post Graduate College of Optometry’s designation of various specialties, paving the way for the institutionalization of the Nigeria Post Graduate Fellowship Residency Programme.

A formal letter of appreciation will be sent to the Vice Chancellor and Senate of ABSU, acknowledging their commitment to advancing optometric education and training.

We extend our warmest congratulations to the entire Optometry community in Nigeria on this significant milestone. Let us continue working together towards a stronger, more united profession that delivers exceptional eye care to those who need it most.

Nigerian Optometric Association looks forward to other optometry training institutions following suit and upgrading their programs to meet the growing demands of the field.

Long live NOA
Long live Optometry
