The National University Commissions (NUC) adopts OD as the minimum qualification for optometry. Later that year, Decree 34 of 1989 (Now Cap 09, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004) gave statutory backing to the practice of Optometry in Nigeria.
First OD-awarding training programme in Nigeria instituted at the Abia State University. In 1987, the first set of locally trained ODs graduated from Abia State University.
The Nigerian Optical Association (NOA) is formed in Lagos (1968). The first indigenous training institution of Optometry is founded at the University of Benin (1972). The Nigerian Optical Association is rechristened to the Nigerian Optometric Association in 1975. In 1976, the First Scientific Conference of the NOA was held at YMCA, Ikoyi, Lagos.
Jokotoye Babalola becomes the first Nigerian optometrist to be employed by the northern regional government. In 1960, optometric the position is reflected in official government records.
Dr Phillips Ekundayo becomes the first British trained Nigerian optometrist. By the 1940the s, number of trained optometrists grew to seventeen.
