The Nigerian Optical Association (NOA) is formed in Lagos (1968). The first indigenous training institution of Optometry is founded at the University of Benin (1972). The Nigerian Optical Association is rechristened to the Nigerian Optometric Association in 1975. In 1976, the First Scientific Conference of the NOA was held at YMCA, Ikoyi, Lagos.
