The Faculty of Medicine at the Bayero University, Kano was established during the 1984/85 Session when the first set of pre-degree students in Medicine was admitted. The undergraduate programme for the 5-year medical training started during the 1986/87 academic sessions.

With the increasing demands by the various communities in Nigeria for the improvement and extension of health services, more so, with the adoption of the primary health care philosophy by the three levels of governments in Nigeria, reorientation of medical training has assumed an important educational issue. Health institutions, including medical schools, are now required to be involved in the training of doctors and other health professionals who are aware of their community role in health care delivery in the country. Therefore, the undergraduate medical programme at Bayero University, Kano has adopted a community-oriented and community-based educational philosophy for the training of its doctors. The programme of training has been designed in such a way that doctors produced from Bayero University, Kano will be well equipped and motivated to practice as primary care physicians in the urban and rural areas of Nigeria. 

In order to achieve this philosophy of relevance in medical education, the faculty will work closely with the staff of the Federal and State Ministries of Health in the planning and execution of its Faculty programmes.

The Faculty of Clinical Sciences came into existence on the 1st of April 2014. It is an offshoot of the Faculty of Medicine established in 1986. The major course offered is MB BS. Other Undergraduate: degrees are: B Sc Pharmacology, B Sc Audiology and Optometry the last 2 recently approved by the Senate.
