PRESIDENT’S CALL
I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to all our partners, vendors, exhibitors, and marketers for their collaboration and support of the Nigeria Optometric Association in its mission to advance eye care in Nigeria and nurture its numerous members in the principles of ethical and high-quality eye care delivery.
It brings me great joy to announce that next year, our destination is the most rapidly developing state in Nigeria, known as “God’s Own State”and recognized as a technology hub in the Land of the Rising Sun. Much has been said about the remarkable progress made by the state government under the leadership of His Excellency Dr. Otti Alex and his cabinet, who, in just two years, have transformed Umuahia into a welcoming home for all.
Why have we chosen Abia as our destination?
There are numerous reasons that may attract anyone to Abia. Whether it be the hospitality, the tranquility, or the warm reception from the locals known for their renowned Achara soup and other exquisite African cuisine.
History of Optometry and Abia state
For Optometrists, Abia state stands out as a key partner and a trailblazer in the field of Optometry development. It is the birthplace of some of our esteemed pioneers, such as the Late Prof. Paul Olemai Ogbuehi, the founder of Optometry in Nigeria, and Late Prof. Eliazar Uche Ikonne, the first Optometry professional Vice Chancellor in Nigeria and a major pillar in the inception of Optometry in Bayero University Kano and rebranding of Optometry faculty in Abia state university Uturu. The widows of these illustrious Patriachs of Optometry and NOA have continued to inspire Optometrists, professional colleagues, and acquaintances to visit the “God’s Own State.
Advancement of Optometry in Abia
Abia State University has recently elevated the Optometry training program to faculty status. It is noteworthy that the Optometry doctoral program (OD) commenced at Abia State University in 1985, the BSc to OD conversion program was initiated at the same institution, the first Optometry induction and internship program began in 1998 at Abia state university, and the very first NOA conference attended by a governor took place in Abia State in 2013. To add to this highlights, Abia State was the first to appoint an optometrist as Commissioner for Health, Prof. O. C Ahuama who incidentally is the chairman of the NOA 2025 Central organizing committee.
We are privileged to have an Optometrists serving as the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences and the Faculty of Optometry. Moreover, the Governor of Abia State has not only extended his hospitality to Nigeria Optometric Association but has also established the Abia State Eye Health Management Bureau, led by an Optometrist, Hon. Dr. Betty Emeka Obasi, who also serves as the Special Assistant to the Governor on Special Duties.
Furthermore, the Governor appointed another distinguished Optometrist, Hon, Dr. Mrs. Ahukwa Mourene, as the Commissioner for Women Affairs in Abia state.
